What a way to start – Bela Fleck, Marcus Roberts and – Johan Santana?

Talk about your whirlwind days. I spent the first three hours of the Burlington Discover Jazz Festival catching the Asphalt Orchestra as it marched down the Church Street Marketplace, coming back to the Free Press to write a little bit about it for tomorrow’s newspaper, rushing over to the Flynn Center to catch a few numbers by Bela Fleck and the Marcus Roberts Trio, leaving to wander among the throngs hearing music on Church Street as part of the action-packed “Long Trail Live” event and then coming back to the office to write some more. As I, a long-standing and long-suffering New York Mets fan, was trying to finish my article with a 10 o’clock deadline staring me in the face, Mets pitcher Johan Santana was closing in on a no-hitter against the world champion St. Louis Cardinals, the first no-hitter in the Mets’ half-century history. I watched the final out on a newsroom television, clapped quietly and basked in the moment for a few seconds before rushing back to my desk to finish my article at the not-too-late hour of 10:08 p.m.

Phew.

Then I rushed back over to the Flynn to snap this shot of (left to right) Fleck, Rodney Jordan, Jason Marsalis and Roberts talking with fans and signing autographs after their show. The little bit of their concert I caught was impressive, especially considering they’ve only played a little more than a half-dozen times together. You can read a little more about it in tomorrow’s article.

I’d like to hang out here in the office and tell you more about it, but frankly, I want to get back out and hear more music. The always-fun Heloise and the Savoir Faire await on Church Street.
